Casting the Cowboy - Through September 15, 2008

An exhibit featuring artifacts from the
collection of Tom Perini and photographs from the Erwin E. Smith
Collection of the Library of Congress on Deposit at the Amon
Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas

This
exhibit derives its name and content from the 2007 National Black
History Theme as set by the Association for the Study of African
American Life and History. The theme is dedicated to the struggles
of peoples of African descent to achieve freedom and equality
in the Americas during the age of emancipation. The exhibit also
looks at the desegregation of Abilene’s public schools
and features the quilts of Zella Woodruff.

This exhibit at Frontier Texas! in downtown Abilene featured
Christmas traditions from different ethnic cultures that would
have been found on the West Texas frontier. You can learn the history
of “Las
Posadas” the Hispanic tradition that has been continuously
celebrated for over 300 years, the contributions of the German culture,
Christmas on a frontier fort and even the history and photos of
Anson’s “Cowboy Christmas Ball” dating back to
1885.

This National Women's History Month exhibit showcases the hsitory
and purposes of the Abilene Woman's Club, founded in 1928, in 3
display cases. Items from the organization's past including news
clippings, photos and antiques.
